NIKO LEUNG X RURI | TURNING WASTE INTO WONDER
Have you ever considered what happens to the land and materials discarded at construction sites? Product designer Niko Leung has found a way to transform overlooked soil into a valuable resource, breathing new life into what would otherwise become waste.
In 2021, Niko and architectural designer Loky Leung co-founded Hong Kong Soil, a project dedicated to repurposing construction site soil. What began as an experiment has evolved into a collection of handcrafted creations—from bird whistles and diffuser boxes to modern furniture, all showcasing the beauty of reclaimed materials. After extensive research and refining techniques, their clay is now even suitable for tableware, proving that discarded materials hold untapped potential.
Each of Niko’s creations undergoes a meticulous transformation process, involving soaking, sieving, crushing, and slip casting. Before investing in machinery, she would manually crush soil under the sweltering Hong Kong heat, driven by her commitment to sustainability. Her workspace, designed for natural ventilation, further reflects her philosophy of minimal environmental impact.
Sourcing materials was not easy—initially, construction sites were reluctant to part with their discarded soil. However, through persistence and partnerships with firms that had access to these resources, Niko secured the materials needed to bring her vision to life.
At its core, Hong Kong Soil champions sustainability, craftsmanship, and a slower approach to design—a philosophy that aligns perfectly with RURI. They even offer ceramic sculpting workshops near Sai Kung, where participants can explore their creativity while learning about sustainable materials. Their Haniwa workshop, for example, allows people to craft Japanese clay figures, turning waste into art.
Niko proudly wears RURI’s sustainable pieces in her studio—fashion crafted with the same thoughtful intention she applies to her own work. Together, RURI and Niko celebrate craftsmanship, sustainability, and the beauty of reclaimed materials, proving that slow, intentional living is the way forward.
